What a monstera actually needs from its pot
Get these three things right and your monstera will thrive. Get them wrong and no amount of care will save it.
Drainage holes — non-negotiable
Monsteras are prone to root rot. Standing water will kill them faster than underwatering ever could. Every pot must have at least one drainage hole.
✓ Tip: Use a saucer — don't block the holeSpace to grow
A mature monstera needs a pot at least 30–40cm wide. Too small and the roots become compacted, slowing growth and stressing the plant.
✓ Tip: Go 2 sizes up each repotStability & weight
Monsteras grow tall and get top-heavy fast. A light plastic pot will tip — choose ceramic, terracotta or concrete for natural ballast.
✓ Tip: Terracotta is the classic choiceQuick monstera pot tips
From our plant specialists — the things most people get wrong when potting a monstera.
-
Go 2 sizes up when repotting — monsteras need room to expand
-
Always use a pot with drainage — standing water causes root rot within days
-
Heavy ceramic or terracotta stops a top-heavy plant from tipping
-
Repot in spring — never in winter when the plant is resting
